I forgot to Blog the important Dr Appt!!

For my family on the 6Th of January I took Gavin up to Primary's Children for the appt( I made seven months earlier) we met with a very educated older gentlemen who is a Genetic Counselor. People all over the country for his appts. Gavin has LVA. With Lva it can be by itself or can be a symptom of all kinds of different syndromes. Including the one that the Dr is testing Gavin for it is called Penried Syndrome. Holding Gavin down for the blood draw was horrible Gavin was sweating by the time we where done wrestle him down. He got poke three different times cause he would hold still. Which this disorder the affects are LVA, Cochlea being not the same size as everyone else, and thyroid problems. Which Gavin has 2 of the three LVA and Cochlea being smaller. The interesting thing is the thyroid problems come when Gavin is a teenager and he takes a pill everyday and that's it. I'm very thankful this condition isn't life threatening. I also talked about with the Dr the chances of having more children with Gavin's condition. Cause I've heard so much from different Dr's to where it is a hit and miss, to probably every child I have, also probably just Gavin no other chance's of this happening again. Not that Gavin's condition would stop me from having more children. Every child takes hard work. I'm talking from the moment they are born to the moment they leave the nest. Sometimes even after the nest. Parenting is the hardest job out there in my opinion. The Dr told me I have a 1/4 of a chance. Cause Dustin and I both carry the gene that cause LVA. So that was nice oh well Heather you carry or oh Dustin you carry it. The Studies have proven both parents carry this genes that LVA is the result when both genes are present. That is why we have a 1/4 chance with every child with have it

Example*******

Dustin Pass
Heather Doesn't Pass = No LVA

Dustin Doesn't Pass
Heather Pass = No LVA

Dustin Doesn't Pass
Heather Doesn't Pass = No LVA

Dustin Pass
Heather Pass = LVA will result

Gavin's children have more of a chance then we do his children is somewhere around half
cause he has the condition.Genetics's are interesting the way it all works. They determine everything about a person hair color, skin ,eyes, if your hair is straight or curly. It is quite amazing. We won't know if Gavin has this condition until early Feb. Also this condition is the most possible of any of them.

The Dr did tell me there is two ways that if Gavin has this condition, to prevent this condition in
other possible children. One is Dustin and I could go into a Fertility Clinic I get a shot that would make me produce more eggs. They take the eggs out of me Fertilize them. Put them in a clear dish look at the eggs and look at the cells in the eggs they can tell which eggs have the disorder and which ones don't and put them back in me. This procedure is $20,000.00. The other thing is they usually put at least a couple eggs back in me so at least one will attach to the wall of the uterus and I'll get pregnant but who's to say that all those eggs wouldn't attach. Jon and Kate plus eight got six kids I love that show. I probably wouldn't get six babies but two babies or three could very well happen. One baby is hard enough having to get up in the middle of the night. Anyway Second way is I get pregnant on my own and around ten weeks along I have a ultrasound done and they stick a very big needle into my belly and get some of the sack fluid and test the fluid for the disorder and tell us that way then they said Dustin and I could choose (NOT THAT WE WOULD EVEN CONSIDER IT) but we could end the pregnancy. I would never do that like I said Gavin is hard work but I would never change anything about him. I wouldn't choose to have it any other way. I don't think I would do the Fertility or the big shot thing cause the shot is painful and even if they said well this baby has it. It still wouldn't change anything. And the Fertility is way to expensive and sounds pretty painful as well.

It was kind of funny. The nurse before the appt took Gavin weigh and Height. He is 35 Pounds and 35 in tall. She laughed and said He's a square! The Pediatric Dr said that we should cut him off from the whole milk. So we did! Gavin is in the 95 percentile for weight and 70 percentile for height! That was on the 13Th when we saw the other Dr. Gavin got the flu shot and his next shots will be kindergarten. That is long time from now. But I'm sure it will fly by. Cause he is already two and I can't believe it.

My name is Erica and I live in Salt Lake. I found your blog on Deaf Village. It caught my eye when I saw Primary Childrens because I knew that you must be from nearby. I was even more interested when I read your whole post because we have just found out that both of our children have LVA and most likely Pendreds. I have a two year old son and a 4 month old daughter. I was excited to be able to read about someone elses experiences with what we are going through right now. I was happy to read about a child in a similar situation to my own who had gotten a cochlear implant that has been a success as these are desicions that we are trying to make right now. If you are interested I have a blog where we have talked about our kids hearing loss it is dietzfam06.blogspot.com

thanks for talking about the genetic testing. Our audiologist recently suggested that my husband and I should maybe consider doing some testing, and we were going back and forth with it. we couldnt decide if we would want to know, because we couldn't decide if it would affect our desire to have more children or not. Its cool to hear about other people's experiences with it, and see what they think of it. I love blogging for that very reason :)
